License Classes & Privileges

Amateur radio licensing in the United States is structured into three primary license classes, each granting increasing operating privileges and access to additional frequency bands. Understanding these license classes is the foundation of responsible and effective amateur radio operation.

The DxHRS Elmer Reference Library presents this information in a practical, operator-focused format to help new and experienced hams clearly understand what privileges each license class provides and how to progress through them.

This licensing guidance follows the DXHRS Elmer operating principles used throughout the Reference Library.

The Three US Amateur Radio License Classes

Technician Class License

The Technician Class license is the entry-level license for new amateur radio operators.

Technician licensees receive extensive operating privileges above 30 MHz, including VHF and UHF bands commonly used for local, repeater, and emergency communications. Limited HF privileges are also granted on specific portions of the 80 m, 40 m, and 15 m bands using certain modes.

This license is ideal for newcomers, local communications, portable operations, and public service participation.

General Class License

The General Class license expands operating privileges significantly, especially on the HF bands.

General licensees gain access to most amateur HF bands, enabling regional, national, and worldwide communication. This license level opens the door to long-distance (DX) operation, digital modes, and broader experimentation.

Many operators consider the General Class license the most versatile license level in amateur radio.

Amateur Extra Class License

The Amateur Extra Class license is the highest license level issued by the FCC.

Extra class licensees receive full operating privileges on all amateur radio frequency bands, including exclusive segments unavailable to lower license classes. This license level is intended for experienced operators who want maximum flexibility, advanced operating authority, and leadership roles within the amateur radio community.

License Progression and Advancement

Amateur radio licenses are designed to encourage learning and advancement. Operators may upgrade their license by passing additional examinations without waiting periods.

Each license upgrade represents deeper technical knowledge, broader privileges, and increased responsibility as an amateur radio operator.
