Ask Elmer: Why doesn’t anyone answer my CQ?

Short Answer:
Usually it’s not because your signal is weak, but because of timing, band conditions, frequency choice, or calling technique.

Why It Works:
Making contacts requires both stations to be listening on the same frequency at the same time. If conditions are poor, the band is quiet, or your CQ blends into background noise, other operators may never hear or recognize your call.

Important Limitation:
Even well-equipped stations experience unanswered CQs when propagation or activity levels are low.

Elmer Tip:
Before calling CQ, listen for several minutes to confirm the band is active and the frequency is in use.

Next Step:
Try calling CQ at different times, on different bands, and slightly adjusting your calling frequency.
